How To Solve Your Common Household Plumbing Problems

Matt Diamond Plumbing • Feb 28, 2023

Plumbing is an essential part of any building, but it’s often ignored until a problem arises. In this guide, we cover the common plumbing problems and their solutions, allowing you to avoid costly repairs and replacements.

1. Leaking Taps

A leaking tap is one of the most common plumbing problems people face. Not only is the constant drip-drip-drip annoying, but it can also waste a significant amount of water – increasing your water bill. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to fix a leaking tap.

To fix, turn off the water supply, disassemble the tap and replace any damaged or worn-out parts such as washers or O-rings. If you are unsure about how to fix the tap, consider hiring a professional plumber to do the job.

2. Blocked Drains

Another common plumbing problem is a blocked drain. This problem can occur in any part of the plumbing system, from the kitchen sink to the bathroom shower. Blocks can form due to hair, soap scum, food waste and other debris.

To fix a blocked drain, you can use a plunger to try and dislodge the blockage. If the plunger does not work, try using a drain snake or auger to remove the clog. If you are still unable to clear the drain, consider hiring a professional plumber.

3. Running Toilets

A running toilet is a common problem that can waste a significant amount of water. A running toilet can occur due to a faulty flush valve flapper, a worn-out fill valve or a malfunctioning float. To fix a running toilet, try adjusting the float, replacing the flapper or replacing the fill valve. If in doubt—call in the professionals!

4. Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can be caused by a variety of issues, such as blocked pipes, a faulty pressure regulator or a damaged water main. To fix low water pressure, try cleaning out the aerator, checking the pressure regulator or calling a professional plumber to diagnose the problem.

5. Hot Water System Issues

A faulty hot water system can cause a lot of problems, including no hot water and leaks. If you notice any of these issues, it’s crucial to call a professional plumber to fix the problem.

If In Doubt—Don’t DIY

It may be tempting to try to fix a plumbing issue yourself but often, DIY attempts can end up costing far more than they would have if a professional had been called.
