Warning Signs Your Drains are Blocked

Apr 19, 2021

Whether the toilet is overflowing or the sink is unusable, a blocked drain is always a nightmare for every homeowner or resident.

But you’ll be pleased to know that this could be avoided as blockages don’t take place overnight if you spot and address the early signs.

We’ve put together several warning signs for you to monitor in your home, so you too can prevent the costly mess that is a blocked drain.

Signs of a blocked drain inside your home

Not only are blocked drains inside your home fairly common, but they’re also cheaper to fix.

However, it’s important to recognise the signs of a blocked drain as a blockage in the mainline could cause significant damage to your home.

Slow drains

Common in the kitchen sink, shower, or bathtub, a slow draining sink is the result of clogged pipes and is probably one of the first signs to look out for.

It’s very common for homeowners to ignore this, but it could result in further blockages.

Gurgling sounds

If you hear strange sounds from the pipes (usually a gurgling sound), you’ve most likely got a blocked drain on your hands. It’s best to leave this to the professionals – contact your local plumber to take a closer book.

Foul odour

If the items stay trapped behind the blockage for a long time, they begin to decompose, and, therefore, the water becomes stagnant, causing a foul smell in and around any affected bathtubs, sinks, and drains.

Rising toilet water

A build-up of wipes, paper or anything else that is flushed down the toilet could lead to the toilet water rising as it is unable to flush.

If you notice that the water in the toilet bowl is rising or that the flush is not draining sufficiently, then we recommend you get in touch with a qualified plumber for an inspection.

Signs of a blocked drain outside the main lines

Blockages that take place outside of your house in the main sewer line tend to be more serious.

Whether it’s some tree roots penetrating the pipes, collapsed pipes, or if it’s because you flushed items that shouldn’t be flushed inside your home, blocked drains outside the main lines which are not addressed quickly could lead to the flooding of your house.

What are some signs to look out for?

  • You’ll notice that there are cracks in the concrete due to water seepage.
  • Your gutters, grates, gully trap, or floor waste systems are overflowing.
  • Several plumbing fixtures are becoming blocked at the same time.

Contacting a skilled plumber as soon as you notice these signs inside your home or outside the main lines could save you both hassle and money in the long run.
