How Long Do Hot Water Systems Last?

Matt Diamond Plumbing • July 4, 2022

When your hot water system breaks down, it can be truly frustrating and inconvenient. As we've come to use hot water for so many daily activities - such as showering, cleaning our dishes and washing our clothes - not having access to this precious commodity can create real problems. While there are professionals who can repair your hot water system, sometimes it may simply need to be replaced. Wondering how long hot water systems last, or how to know a replacement is necessary? Read on to learn more.

The lifespan of a hot water system

On average, hot water systems last 10 years, though this depends on varying factors. If your system comes with a tank, it will have a different lifespan from one that doesn't, depending on the material used to make it. Mild steel or enamel-lined tanks may last 5 to 10 years, while copper and stainless-steel tanks usually last closer to 10 years.

The frequency of maintenance also greatly affects how long your tank will last. Ensuring small repairs are promptly resolved by a professional will keep your tank running efficiently and for as long as possible, and will reduce the need for more expensive work down the track. As particular parts of hot water systems do need replacing more often, it's important to enlist your local plumber to take care of any issues when they arise and to perform regular check-ups to address problems before they get out of hand.

Replacing your system

It's not always easy to know whether your system needs to be repaired or replaced, but assessing its age is one good indication. There are further signs you can be on the lookout for which can help you determine whether a replacement is necessary.

  • Cooler, faster-running water: If your water isn't as hot as it was, or running a lot faster than before, your water pressure is low. While this might be caused by something as simple as a blockage in your shower head or decreased efficiency of your heating element, it could indicate it's time for a replacement. A plumber can replace your heating element, but if that doesn't solve the problem or a leak is detected replacement may be the best option.
  • Noise: Hot water systems aren't noisy, so if your system has become loud suddenly or gradually, it may be failing. A professional assessment can determine if it's something as simple as a faulty valve, or if it's a sign your system is reaching the end of its life.
  • Rust: If you detect rust around the unit fittings, it's important to call a plumber and arrange a call out to discuss your options.
