Why Do I Have No Hot Water?

Nov 11, 2021

Hot water is an integral part of your everyday life. From that first piping hot morning shower to wake you up and get your day started with a flourish to washing your dishes and then relaxing in a warm bath in the evening, we don’t know what we would do without it!

However, if your hot water stops working, all of those wonderful, convenient things go out the window. You might be left shivering in your shower, wondering why this has happened.

Why might your hot water have stopped working? If you can’t think of a cause, read on. We have collected some common reasons why you might be taking an ice bath!

Faulty tank

If you cannot think of a reason why your hot water isn’t working as it should, then it is best to first look at your boiler (or rather, have a plumber take a look). Your tank may be old and past its prime, causing it to have certain faults. If your boiler tank is newer, it could still be leaking, so have a professional check this out to confirm.

Power cuts

If you have had a storm recently and your power has gone out, your boiler may well have cut out, too. In this case, you may find that your boiler has returned to its original factory settings and will not be working as you want.

Pressure

One common reason for your hot water failing is the pressure in your boiler dropping. This is something that homeowners often encounter and can be solved by topping up the boiler manually. However, if this happens frequently, it is worth speaking to a professional to see if you require a new boiler altogether.

Boiler size

You might have found that your hot water always worked before you expanded your household. If you have had some recent additions to your home and find your hot water running cold, the size of your tank could be the culprit.

Older boiler tanks in smaller homes in particular are not designed for larger families with more needs. You may need to upgrade your boiler as your family puts more strain on it. If you find your hot water running out very quickly, this is likely to be the issue.

Thermostat

Your boiler is usually programmed by your thermostat; if there is nothing wrong with the boiler itself, you may find that your thermostat is the culprit! If you happen to have your boiler on a timer, a fault with your thermostat could cause the boiler to cut out altogether, leaving you without the hot water you need.
